40 year old, Ben Fuller didn't know that his interest in arts in high school could be turned into a lucrative career in painting and decorating.
"When I was at school I didn't really know what I wanted to do as I was only really good at art and basic math. But as it turned out, I found my passion in a trade in which I could be creative and work on different projects. Painting offers a lot of variety in techniques and surfaces, which I love."
Starting out at a young age of 19 and after working several years for others, Ben has now been running his own painting and decorating business, TNZ Coatings, in Penrith for over a decade now.
With over 22 years of experience under his belt, Ben hardly finds the actual work challenging anymore. Rather, it's the glitches in running his own business that are more bothersome.
"The biggest challenges currently for me is employees. The young crowd these days just don't get it. A lot seem to not understand putting the hard yards in. Mobile phones and attitudes are a major problem not to mention some lie through their teeth and treat you like you were born yesterday."
Getting paid on time is yet another problem. "Nothing feels better than being able to finish the job quickly, seeing the client happy with the work and getting paid the same day," the painter confesses.
Ben’s typical day at work involves doing feature walls for his clients.
Rather than considering it as a boring job done day in and day out, Ben takes pride in every job he completes, gets to visit some great sites and working on new and exciting projects.
"One of my proudest moments was when I converted this old garage into a music rehearsal studio with a dark alleyway feature wall we did. This had several different coats using various techniques," Ben explains
When not working, the Penrith based painter treasures family time. Ben also spends a lot of time wakeboarding and when he gets a chance he trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or goes surfing.
As a veteran in painting and decorating, Ben has one piece of advice for the newcomers.
